“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the father seeketh such to worship him.” [John 4:23]
Worship is more than an experience; it’s a lifestyle. Jesus expressly showed us where our worship ought to come from – not from our minds (the seat of emotions, thoughts, and decisions) or from our bodies (though we offer our bodies as well according to Romans 12:1), but from our spirits – the real US. As interesting as the topic of a lifestyle of worship is, it is my desire to focus (for the purpose of this blog post) on the art and experience of worship.
When we consider worship as an art, it speaks of something we make for God – something from the depth of our hearts uniquely given to Him by us. Paul said “by him let us therefore offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name” [Hebrews 13:15] in attempt to explain the New Testament approach to worship whereby we offer sacrifices of a different kind. Instead of looking for a lamb that is spotless of the best of our cattle, we are made to understand that we can offer the calves of our lips unto God [Hosea 14:2] or the fruits like Paul said. WOW! Isn’t that exciting? He refers to our praises as the calves (or bulls, goats, lambs, etc) that we offer in the New Testament. But, that’s not just it. King David, the man after God’s heart, spoke the heart of God also when he said “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bullock” [Psalms 69:30-31]. Though David lived in times when animal sacrifice was instructed by God, he had a deeper revelation of the actual desire of God. Little wonder then that God called him the man after His heart.
On a certain day, I thought to myself “if God’s desire was not bulls and goats, why then did He ask for it?” And the Spirit of God shared a thought with me. He let me know as softly as He mostly speaks, that the idea was not in the animals. Rather, the worship was in their obedience to His word. It was the actual obedience (which should have been carried out in love) that was supposed to bring the Father joy. The few people that knew what God wanted and celebrated the law as life (like Moses and David) are the only ones who enjoyed a better relationship with God in the old covenant. So, your understanding is very vital to God in worship.
In considering worship as an art, we look at our action viewpoint of this all-important spiritual activity. However, another more beautiful aspect that in turn makes the art of worship easier and more exciting is God’s response to us as we worship – worship as an experience. As we worship God, He does something to our spirits. Have you ever noticed that when you sincerely worship the Father, there is no doubt in your heart about the existence and reality of God and the spiritual realm? At that point, your faith is refined by the Master to an optimal level. A dear sister shared a secret with me a couple of weeks ago; she said that every time you say “I love you Jesus; I appreciate you Jesus”, He responds by increasing your faith in Him. If you did not believe as you ought to initially, He would supply your spirit with more ability to believe. Ever since, I have not stopped practicing uttering those words. In the place of worship, you are filled with joy indescribable and bliss immeasurable. Frankly, there are no words in any living language good enough to express how you feel. It’s a spiritual high of some sense that only edifies you every time.
The experience of worship changes throughout our lifetime – it gets richer and more beautiful every day, because the Bible speaks of the manifold (many-sided) wisdom of God that is unveiled to us from glory to glory. In the experience aspect of worship, we see Jesus as He is and we are transformed into the same image. Someone rightly said that those who look at the Sun do not see the shadows. As we worship, we see God and everything else immediately becomes small – the challenges, worries, sorrows, and impossibilities are transformed into laughter. Oh GLORY!!! The Amplified Version of Hebrews 12:2 reads “looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith”. For God to break all the walls in your life and remove all impossibilities, He seriously needs you to turn away from those obstacles and focus entirely on Him.
With all that has been mentioned, it is my desire that we will all make our worship a place of art and experience. The Spirit of God said something to me today that will be beneficial to you. He said “give me your own worship; know that your worship experience is different from anyone else’s. So, enjoy and cherish it.” Don’t try to worship like anybody else in using their words or songs. You can learn from their attitude towards worship, but be inspired by God to give your own worship. God wants to hear what you have to say about Him. And, He wants to speak back to you as well. So, always worship with an expectant ear, ready to hear from God. You’ll notice your words and God’s responses improve over time; that’s why it’s an art and an experience!
WOW! This showed me an entirely new dimension of worship....I am BLESSED. God bless you St. Burnish....keep changing lives!
ReplyDeletean inspired piece on true worship...as the Bible says simply in Samuel, man looks at the outer part but God looks at the heart. truly, we should all let our worship spring true from the depths of our own hearts, expressing it in our own way. God continually bless you Deji
ReplyDeleteLove this post! So glad I discovered your blog brother.
ReplyDeleteWorship is our love connection with God.
He said “give me your own worship; know that your worship experience is different from anyone else’s. So, enjoy and cherish it.”
ReplyDeleteLove it! Because it's so True! Let the Holy Spirit guide you into worshiping GOD in "Spirit ad in Truth"...Who else can do that?!
What helps me, is I just forget the atmosphere and just let the Spirit guide me into Scriptures...into the Revelation of GOD'S Love [Mercy & Grace!!!] and Power! And then...the more I realize that's that knowledge of HIM is soooo deep/unfathomably deep! I just literally "stand in awe" and just imagine the day when we we all stand like Angels [the Beautiful Choir of Heaven] singing "Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD!" hence the "Bliss" you spoke of Sir!
Like it's almost like i'm an ingrate [not in the depressing sense of it]....because I KNOW! i'm soo not doing justice to thanking HIM for who HE IS! I mean, who can?! Even if I had a "thousand tongues" it wouldn't be enough...What can I thank HIM enough for?! For HIS Son? For Salvation? For even allowing me to praise HIM?! [When many are either mute, are still out there in the world?]...You are right, the experience cannot be explained fully...at all...Different revelations at different times...
GOD BLESS and continually use You in JESUS' NAME, AMEN! Keep letting the Spirit inspire and use you to inspire others!
@ Lola: Thank you, and Amen!!!
ReplyDelete@ Nnaemeka: Thanks for that comment. It'll be good for you to know that you were one of my inspirations in high school. God bless you mucho!
@ Homie (Lamide): Thanks for the comment! And, yes, that love connection needs to be kept alive.
@ Wale: I really love your comment because it mentions an important part of worship, which is the fact that we can only worship through the Word. I believe that's the "in truth" aspect of it. Amen, and God bless you too!!!
WOW! This is amazing! What's more is that I just had a wonderful time in God's presence before reading this. It was a different experience. I totally believe the worship God in your own way bit! This experience was different and wonderful!! You just feel God's love and just worship him like you are in front of Him..because you are! You are in His throne room! Glory!
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about worship, I'm like, Heaven will be sweet!
WOW!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH WITH THESE WORDS OF EXHORTATION AND INSPIRATION...LEARNED A LOT ABOUT WORSHIP!!! THANKS!! GOD HAS INDEED BLESSED YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteDude, this is really deep. I am reminded by Isaiah 43:21 where God told His servant, 'Look at the people that I have made for myself, that they may show forth my praise.' At the end of the day, we were created basically to worship HIM- and why we must pursue all other interests in life with dilligence, we must never forget that we were born to worship Him.
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous: Amen, and God bless you too!
ReplyDelete@ Mfonobong: WOW!!! That's a great scripture to add. I love it; it speaks to our purpose. You know, in Philosophy, they say that man's utmost desire is to be happy, but for him to be happy, he needs to fulfill his purpose. I was talking with a couple of friends and we came to the conclusion that it is not possible to be sad or be a failure as a worshipper; it is because worshippers (true ones) fulfill their purpose.
The Spirit of the Lord in the heart of man....something more than gold!
ReplyDeleteAaahh... worship! It's kind of exciting, Deji, to hear/read someone talking specifically about the 'art' and 'experience' of worship cos it takes revelation and experience to talk about it, rather than browsing thru it and talking about the life of worship (which is very important) like a lot of people do, lol!, meanwhile we're hungry to know how to participate effectively in the art and experience of worship which will enable us live the life of worship. This blog is sooo needed, brother!
ReplyDeleteU know, 'worship triggers deeper worship'. Cos worship is the response of our human spirits to the revelation of "who God is" and as we respond to that revelation in worship, "BAM!" comes another fresh revelation of his GLORY -'who he is', and it never finishes cos there are manifold sides to Him. In fact, I really believe that the reason the angels continually cry "Holy!" is not that they're programmed to cry 'Holy' but that they're beholding and responding to fresh manifestations of God's GLORY that they behold.
C'mon, a revelation of God's GLORY (His nature, personality, beauty, excellencies, qualities, etc) commands worship... yeah, it commands worship from the spirit that receives that revelation. Look at Moses in Ex.34:6-8, when God revealed his GLORY to him (in those words spoken), the Bible says in verse 8, he "made haste, and bowed his head to the earth, and worshiped". When a divine revelation of the GLORY of God hits your spirit, your spirit's automatic response is to worship. That's why sometimes, some of us respond in tongues to a revelation that just hit our spirit. Those tongues were your spirit's expression of worship. Sorry guys this is already long, but thanx a million, Deji, for sharing! There are much more deeper and interesting things to be said about this subject. Thanx for sharing, and please keep sharing, brother! Ha-haa, glory!
I LOVE JESUS!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis blog truly blessed me and I bless the name of the Most High for what His Holy Spirit is doing in your life... Priceless!!!
Thank you and remain in the fellowship of the Most High God!
@ Chibz: I always love to read your comments - so Spirit-filled. I really like what you mentioned about the reason why the angels cry "holy". I remember Pastor Chris saying one time that if Jesus ever appeared to you, all that you'll be able to say is "HOLY"!!! He said you'll just keep repeating the word. Haha, GLORY!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, when we see another side of the King of Kings, the One Who was and is and is to come, we cannot but respond with words of adoration. And, then, sometimes we may even break forth into a spiritual dance - oh boy!!! That's another day's topic.
But, thanks a lot, Chibz!!!
@ Anonymous: Thanx for your comments, Anonymous. To God be the glory for what He's doing! He's just so wonderful... there's none like Him.
ReplyDelete@ Deji: Ooooh Glory! What Pastor said is absolutely true oooh... It is! Wow! There are actually so much more to say about true worship, and of course there are various depths (so to speak) in worship.
...and dancing in the Spirit? Hahaa! That's really another day's topic, lol!
@ Anonymous: Thanks for the comment!
ReplyDelete@ Chiz: Yes o, about that dancing in the Spirit...lol!
just awesome!!!what can i say?this is really d cry of the spirit 4 such a time as this.the spirit of the lord is putting in us a desire to come above surface iiving to an intimate drink with him and this can only be triggered by spending time in his presence in worship.truly truly in times of worship, the lord shows u differnt phases of his person.u cud pick up something in the spirit and u check in the scriptures and to ur suprise its there.Deji u r blessed!continue the work.charles harry
ReplyDelete@ Charles: Thanks a lot for the comment; I think something great that you mentioned is that you can pick up something in the spirit, open the Word and find it there. I've never ceased to find that move of the Spirit absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that new perspective with us on this post.
God bless!
spot on deji...spot on!...Worship as an experience and art can also to transcended to a lifestyle....its even heavenly knowing that we have access into the realm of the spirit...The bible even says we edify our spirit through spiritual hymns...There is a deeper level...knowing that wherever we are, we can close our eyes and worship the Spirit of God in tongues is even mind blowing!!! The possibilities are truly endless...Thanks bro...
ReplyDeleteI got goosebumps reading this.
ReplyDeleteI remember the first time I heard something similar to this was at Bible study last semester. The lady said your worship and my worship are 2 different things. But most importantly she focused on how God reveals His purpose and vision for our lives during worship!
And the more you worship God the closer you get to Him. I LOVE JESUS :) I LOVE JESUS! :)
Thank you for this part --> "give me your own worship; know that your worship experience is different from anyone else’s."
Let's make worship our lifestyle because we were created to worship!!!
@ Victor: Yes, we have access to the realm of the spirit anyday and anytime. And, it's just glorious to think about!
ReplyDelete@ Princess: God does reveal purpose amongst other things to us as we worship. Thank you so much for your comment. God bless you!
WOW! Praise GOD!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTrue worship from the Spirit! Wow
Thank God!!!
-I was crying in tears while worshiping during the Communion Service!
Wow!!! Glory to God, I love you Jesus, I appreciate you Jesus!!!
ReplyDeleteI came across this scripture in the MSG translation:
"Matthew 16:17- My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I'm going to tell you who you are, really are. "
This correlates so much with the last few lines of the post. Peter had just described Jesus in his own words, and Jesus in turn told Peter about himself. Thats what worship is, you speak words from your heart, and He in turn fills you with words of who you are...really are!!!
Oh waow! what a LIFE...God Bless you guys for your comments I have been blessed by them all...
